The Sun in Astrology: Your Core Self and Purpose

In astrology the Sun stands for your central identity: what you are trying to become, what gives you energy and where you want to be recognised. Its sign is the zodiac sign you already know, and its house shows the part of life where you most need to shine.

What the Sun describes in a birth chart

The Sun is the organising centre of a chart. Every other placement is read partly in relation to it, which is why the Sun sign became the shorthand for a whole person. It describes the qualities you grow into over a lifetime rather than the ones you show on a first meeting (that is the rising sign) or in private (that is the Moon).

Traditionally the Sun also describes vitality, confidence and the relationship to authority figures, often a father or whoever played that role. A well-supported Sun tends to show up as a steady sense of direction; a Sun under pressure from hard aspects often describes someone who has to work harder to trust their own judgment.

The Sun in the twelve signs

Because the Sun spends about a month in each sign, the Sun sign is shared by everyone born in the same four weeks of any year. The sign gives the style of the core self: fire signs pursue purpose through action, earth signs through results, air signs through ideas and people, water signs through feeling and attachment. Near the boundary between two signs the exact birth year and time decide which sign the Sun was in.

The Sun in the houses

The house holding your Sun is the area of life where you look for meaning and recognition. A tenth-house Sun wants a visible career; a fourth-house Sun puts identity into home and family; a seventh-house Sun often finds itself through close partnership. House positions need an accurate birth time.

The Sun's aspects

Planets touching the Sun colour how you express yourself. Moon aspects show whether what you want and what you need pull together; Saturn aspects add seriousness and a slower route to confidence; Jupiter aspects add optimism and reach; Mars aspects add drive and a quicker temper.

The Sun in relationships

In synastry, another person's planets landing on your Sun light up your sense of self. Sun conjunct Moon between two charts is one of the classic markers of a lasting bond, because one person's identity meets the other's emotional needs directly.

The Sun in transit

The Sun's yearly circuit is the base rhythm of horoscopes. When it returns to its birth position you have your solar return, roughly on your birthday, and astrologers cast a chart for that moment to read the year ahead. When the transiting Sun crosses your rising sign, Midheaven or natal planets, those areas of life get a few days of attention.

Common questions

Is my Sun sign the same as my star sign?

Yes. The star sign or zodiac sign people quote is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born.

Why do some sites give me a different Sun sign?

The Sun changes sign on a slightly different date each year. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign, check with your birth year and time, which the birth chart calculator does.
