How to Read a Birth Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide
A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. To read one, start with the Sun, Moon and rising sign, then place each planet in its sign and house, then look at the aspects between them. The order matters: big picture first, details second.
What you need
Your date of birth gives every planet's sign. Your time of birth gives the rising sign, the Midheaven and the houses; even a time to the nearest hour helps. Your place of birth fixes the time zone and the horizon. A birth certificate or a parent's memory are the usual sources of the time.
A reading order that works
Reading a chart all at once is overwhelming. This order builds the picture in layers.
- 1. The rising sign: how you come across and approach life.
- 2. The Sun's sign and house: what you are building and where.
- 3. The Moon's sign and house: what you need to feel safe.
- 4. The ruler of your rising sign: its sign and house steer the whole chart.
- 5. The personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars): thinking, love and drive.
- 6. Jupiter and Saturn: where life opens up and where it asks for work.
- 7. The tightest aspects, especially to the Sun, Moon and rising sign.
- 8. Patterns: a stellium (three or more planets in one sign), or an empty half of the chart.
Reading one placement
Every placement is planet plus sign plus house. Venus in Gemini in the 5th house: love (Venus) that needs variety and conversation (Gemini), expressed through romance, play and creativity (5th house). Then check aspects: Venus square Saturn would add caution and a fear of rejection to that picture.
Common mistakes
Reading one placement as the whole person. Treating hard aspects as bad luck. Ignoring the house a planet sits in. Using a guessed birth time for the rising sign: a difference of a few minutes can change it.
