Synastry is the astrology of two people: it lays one birth chart over another and reads the contacts between them. It's what sun-sign compatibility is trying to be. Instead of comparing two signs, it compares every planet in one chart with every planet in the other, which is why one pair of Leos can be wonderful together and another pair a disaster.

The contacts that carry a relationship
Out of dozens of possible contacts, a handful do most of the work.

- Moon contacts - emotional safety. The relationships that feel like home usually have one.

Birth dates only, or times too?
Two birth dates are enough for a real synastry reading. Planet-to-planet aspects hold whatever time of day each person was born, and they're most of the picture. The Moon is the only planet that moves fast enough to be uncertain without a time, and when it's close to changing sign the reading says so.
Birth times add the houses: where one person's planets land in the other's chart. That shows which part of life each person shows up in - their Venus in your fifth house reads as play and romance; in your sixth, as someone who makes daily life easier.
What a score can't tell you
Compatibility percentages add up the easy contacts and subtract the hard ones, which misses the point. The hard contacts are often what makes a relationship magnetic, and the easy ones are sometimes why it drifts. A square between your Mars and their Venus is friction and chemistry in the same aspect.
A reading keeps both halves in view and explains how each tends to play out, so you recognise it when it happens rather than carrying around a number.

Synastry compares two birth charts planet by planet. The contacts between them - one person's Venus against the other's Mars, one person's Saturn on the other's Moon - describe the dynamic between two people far more specifically than their sun signs can.
Can I do synastry with only birth dates?
Yes. Planet-to-planet aspects hold without birth times, and they are most of a synastry reading. Times add the houses and the rising sign, which sharpen the picture, and the reading tells you which parts depend on them.
Will it say whether we're compatible?
Not as a verdict. It explains where the relationship flows, where it rubs and how those tend to play out. Whether the friction is worth it is a judgement only the two of you can make.
Is it all right to use someone else's birth details?
The reading describes the dynamic between two charts; it never claims to know what the other person thinks or feels. Even so, only add someone's details if you'd be comfortable telling them you had.
